Ayo Fayose |
Honourable Dayo Saka Fafunmi of the Lagos State House of Assembly believes that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State would not end his four-year tenure as governor.
In this interview with Naij.com, he also looks at the Nigerian political climate and concludes that
posterity would judge some people for their roles in the destruction of Nigeria.
INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS:
* Lagos has more than five million voters but each time there is an election, not up to 50 percent of the voters come out to vote.
* Nigeria is a country where anything can happen and by implication, you know what that means. By implication, the worst should be expected out of every situation.
* Who are leaders? They are people whose passion would inspire you to dream.
* As at today, intelligence reports show that the PDP is recruiting people, land grabbers, thugs and others. They are recruiting people that can unleash terror on the people. Is that democracy?
What I concentrated on is the PVC because no matter how the people love to vote for you, if they don’t have the PVC, there is no way they can do so. You know it is not like in 2011 when we used the TVC. Now, INEC has said it must be the PVC which is good because it will strengthen the democratic process. It will make the act of rigging almost impossible and make the voice of the people be heard in the country. I also concentrated on dealing with leaders and youths in my constituency so that I can have block votes. My constituency is predominantly dominated by the APC. Recently we had an incursion by the PDP but it is just like an insurgency that would soon be eradicated. Then the postponement by INEC made it look like the whole process was not going to end. Largely, I would say that there is a remarkable awareness on the part of the people and members of my constituency are now more than willing to cast their votes.
Lagos has more than five million voters but each time there is an election, not up to 50 percent of the voters come out to vote, but the story has changed. People are now conscious of that power to elect the ones who govern their affairs.
Some people are already nursing the fear that the elections might not hold even though we have just few days to the exercise. Don’t you nurse the same fear?
Nigeria is a country where anything can happen and by implication, you know what that means. By implication, the worst should be expected out of every situation. I am one of the few men that have lost confidence in the Commander-In-Chief and President of this country. For a man to prepare for an election which comes once in four years, and the head of INEC came out and told Nigerians that he is more than ready for the election and even came out to demonstrate it on the floor of the Senate, and all of a sudden, you are giving reasons why the election should be postponed, there is much to it. Jega showed that he was ready. Card readers make serious sense. They would authenticate PVCs, count the PVCs and you cannot vote more than the number authenticated. As I said, this is a country where anything can happen.
I really don’t want to continue to nurse that fear looking at certain indices and statements made by some of the PDP leaders themselves. Lately, I have seen it as a lost battle for the PDP. They have started seeing it and they know it. Even card-carrying members of the PDP are canvassing for change. That is the epitome of sincerity and patriotism displayed by some of them. I was excited when I listened to the former Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries, who told us that though he is a card-carrying member of the PDP, the PDP is not ready to give us that kind of leadership Nigerians deserve. Professor Chukwuma Soludo too came out to say it. They are not saying that PDP cannot still rule, they are saying the present situation in the country needs a radical departure from the usual way of doing things. In Nigeria, almost everything has failed.
I listened to a PDP man on television talking about why military can be brought in to checkmate insurgency. But he was not even ashamed to tell Nigerians of the story of his experience on the Benin-Ore Road. He told us that armed robbers over-powered the Nigerian Police and that the situation was saved by the Nigerian Army. He said they were held hostage for over one hour. That statement tells you what the government has turned the Nigerian Police into. It is ordinarily the responsibility of the Nigerian Police to ensure security of lives and properties. If he can affirm the failure of the police, then what has happened to the billions of naira budgeted for the Nigerian Police? They should start thinking of how to look inwards and cleans their hands because where we have found ourselves as a nation is a function of our personal decision to remain where we are. Nigerians are yearning for change. Even the military men being used are desirous of change; everyone wants to be proud of his nation. I want to advise that whatever the PDP is planning against the election, it should know that the country is bigger than the party.
For sometime now, President Goodluck Jonathan has spent days in Lagos soliciting for votes and he has been endorsed by some people like Yinka Odumakin…
When you are mentioning people with pedigree, will you mention Yinka Odumakin? Who is he? And after all there, he would come out to say he is fighting for the people; someone who is anti-people. These are people who are businessmen hiding under human rights activism to make money. So people without conscience, who don’t consider the effect of their activities on the people, you don’t see such as leaders. Who are leaders? They are people whose passion would inspire you to dream. But I don’t know what Odumakin would inspire to dream about. Look at those people Jonathan has succeeded in getting to his camp, look at them. I am a Christian but I can tell you that when it comes to politics, my pastor cannot tell me who to vote for. Do you know that one of the pastors I wouldn’t want to mention, told his colleagues in one of their caucus meetings that they must ensure that Goodluck Jonathan is voted for because his (the pastor’s) oil mining licence is about to expire. So because of his own pecuniary interest, he is forcing others and jettisoning the interests of the masses. Now, you would see a faithful follower or a pastor who has lost his job, how many of them are assisted by the church?
I can’t speak evil of a man of God but what I am saying is that every utterance from the mouth of a man of God should have the semblance of humanity, the semblance of the fear of God. Is it part of God’s work to help launder money? Is it part of God’s work? For me, I don’t see why pastors should celebrate money and not God. So Jonathan’s presence in the Southwest is aimed at taking the battle to the Southwest where they can get support. But the people of Southwest are as resolute as ever to ensure their votes count and they are ready to protect their votes.
As at today, intelligence reports show that the PDP is recruiting people, land grabbers, thugs and others. They are recruiting people that can unleash terror on the people. Is that democracy? Now when you look at their approach towards this election, you will know that they are nothing but a party that should be treated with a long spoon if you must dine with them.
You look optimistic about your presidential candidate, but there are fears that Muhammadu Buhari would not be allowed to rule if he eventually wins. Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti is quoted to have threatened that his state would pull out of Nigeria if Buhari wins. How do you react to this?
Let me start by telling you that Ayodele Fayose is only blabbing. He is not even in a position to say where he state would belong even in the case of secession. If you look at his utterances lately, you would know that he is a confused man, a man that lacks a sense of direction. I know he is likely to make history ass the first governor that has been impeached twice in this country. Tell me one singular thing he has been able to deliver since he became governor. He is either attacking his predecessor or attacking APC policies or antagonising APC candidates since he became governor. If he is a man of ideology, he should have brought this ideology into bettering the lives of Nigerians since his party is seriously lacking in this area. For Okupe, he belongs to the group of Nigerians whose tribes would later see them as outcasts when they get back. I’m not saying they should not do their jobs, but the essential thing is; is you action fair to all concerned? Is it in the collective interest of the people? It is only in Nigeria that a superior officer would give instruction to a junior one to do what is wrong and the junior one, knowing it is wrong and against the law, would still go ahead and do it. When your superior gives you an instruction considered illegal, your job is to draw his attention to it.
So the rumour that they don’t want to hand-over to Buhari, I am only waiting for March 28 when Nigerians would decide who they want to lead them and after that we leave the rest for God. I know they can’t hand over to the military. If a President should decide to hand-over to the military, do you know what he has done against the constitution? The situation must be managed that whoever wins should be allowed to rule.
