On April 28 Nigerian troops rescued nearly 300 girls and women during a successful operation against Boko Haram terrorists in the northeastern Sambisa Forest.
The
army announced the rescue on Twitter and said it was screening and
interviewing the abducted girls and women. The whole country was waiting
and praying, hoping that the Chibok girls, abducted on April 14, 2014,
might be among the freed victims.
Reacting to the great news, Obiageli Ezekwesili, the chief campaigner of the BringBackOurGirls group and the former minister of education, expressed her hope and joy by saying:
“It is a great news at this particular time. We are hopeful that this news will be for real and that the Chibok girls will be among those rescued after they have been profiled.”
Although the next day Sani Usman, the Army spokesman, said that the girls rescued from Boko Haram terror camps are “not the Chibok girls,” Nigerians are still overwhelmed with positive feelings.
The successful operation of Nigerian Army has inspired and brought hope to #BringBackOurGirls campaign group and its leader.
The president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has also commended the Nigerian army for the rescue of the girls and women from the Sambisa Forest and encouraged the troops not to relent as many more victims remain to be set free.
Hopes that the Chibok girs are still alive became rife again last month after one of the escapees said that the children were being kept in Gwoza. Soon Gwoza was reclaimed, however, the girls were not discovered in the area.
