A source close to Osun police command said, “Preliminary investigations have revealed that Abbey, who is also called Iku, is the leader of a six-man gang of robbers that has been terrorising motorists on Ife-Akure expressway.”
It was gathered that the robbers where on the verge of carrying out another operation on the early hours of Monday, when some residents of the area informed police. It was narrated that men of SARS, had waited for the robbers before blocking them as they attempted to barricade the road. In the process, the police got three members of the gang arrested.
Under interrogation, the arrested members of the gang confessed that the late Abbey was the leader of the gang and gave police information about his house in Modakeke.
Explaining the killing of Abbey, a top security source said, “SARS team had stormed Abbey’s house in Modakeke as early as 5.30 am on Tuesday to arrest him, but the suspect, engaged the team in gun duel and died in the process.”
Leader of the police team that infiltrated the gang, Omoyele Adekunle ,DSP, gave the name of the three suspects as Dayo Adebanpe, 28, a motor mechanic from Ile-Ife, Kunle Adepoju, 23, an okada operator also from Ile-Ife, and Mathias Aleke, 27, an okada operator from Modakeke.
Adekunle added, “The suspects also confessed that among others criminal activities perpetrated by them, the gang was behind the robbery attack on a bank in Modakeke late last year where about six people were killed.”
High way robbery is not new in Nigeria as the bad roads have allowed robbers gain an edge against motorists. Popular highway robbers who have operated in Nigeria include the likes of Lawrence Anini, Dr. Oyenusi, Shina Rambo and Orimeji, who was killed after a gun brawl with police last week.
